I’ve had the pleasure of being on the receiving end of Alan’s insightful script analysis skills. In particular, he gave great feedback in the areas of structure and dialogue, where his discerning eye was able to highlight the issues that needed attention and offer workable solutions for the improvement of the material.

Want to know if your script is as good as it can be?
Want an experienced writer to give you a detailed analysis guaranteed to make your script better?
Alan has worked as a professional script analyst for over ten years. Back in 1999 Alan was a development executive at The Gibson Group where he script edited Glenn Standring’s debut feature The Irrefutable Truth About Demons (a.k.a. The Truth About Demons) before creating an original one-hour drama series for TV3 (The Strip). He headed the script department and script edited all forty episodes produced.
Alan has over 100 hours of produced TV drama and comedy credits, and has held numerous writing, development and production jobs in the film and television industry.
He has also gone through Barney Lichtenstein’s legendary UCLA Extension course on being a Hollywood script assessor, and completed the advanced development internship where he did coverage for a producer based at Paramount Studios.
Having taught in the Writers Program at UCLA Extension for nearly 17 years, I have had students worldwide take my courses, and I can say wholeheartedly that Alan ranks among the highest.
- BARNEY LICHTENSTEIN, UCLA Instructor (Story Analyst Course)

Alan has done script analysis for both new writers and produced film-makers in Hollywood, Australia and New Zealand. He is in the “stable” of script analysts used by The New Zealand Writers’ Guild.
He teaches screenwriting at Auckland’s School of Performing and Screen Arts at Unitec, at Auckland University’s Centre for Continuing Education as well as at The Creative Hub.
.
During the script assessment, Alan will examine and critique:
- story structure
- characters and character relationships
- theme
- dialogue
- technical considerations (how the script is set-out on the page, etc)
.
His script analysis will include a detailed 6-7 page written analysis and a 90 minute one-on-one consultation with you (over the phone, or in person if you live in Auckland).
Page notes can be supplied if a hard copy of the script is available, and the consultation can be recorded for future reference if you wish.
Further testimonials can be found on the Testimonials page.

NEW PRICING UPDATE!
Late last year I was forced to hike up my prices as I had no time to undertake any new script analyses while I: completed a Master in Creative Writing (check), moved house (check), and finished the academic year at Unitec where I was lecturing (check). I promised that in March 2011 I would again be available for script analyses. True to my word (and only a little late), my first client for 2011 has just sent me his script to assess.
To celebrate my re-entry into the world of freelance script analyses I’m dropping my prices by more than 40%
NZ$350.00+GST ($402.50) or US$275.00
Prices are for feature screenplays (85 to 125 pages). Contact me for prices for plays, short film scripts, TV series material, etc.

Email info@shootfirst-productions.com or contact me through the Contact form with any questions or to arrange a no-obligation initial consultation.

Excellent assessment, just what I was looking for.

We used Alan’s script assessment services for our play ‘Eulogy’. Alan provided us with comprehensive feedback on the play’s structure, the narrative and character development. He was very generous in sharing ideas and getting us to look deeper at our work. Without a doubt, the play is much stronger as a result of Alan’s work and I wholeheartedly recommend his services to anyone looking to enhance their writing.
